Extending Finite Group Actions from Surfaces to Handlebodies

چکیده

We show that every action of a finite dihedral group on a closed orientable surface F extends to a 3-dimensional handlebody V , with ∂V = F . In the case of a finite abelian group G, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a G-action on a surface to extend to a compact 3-manifold, or, equivalently in this case, to a 3-dimensional handlebody; in particular all (fixed-point) free actions of finite abelian groups extend to handlebodies. This is no longer true for free actions of arbitrary finite groups: we give a procedure which allows us to construct free actions of finite groups on surfaces which do not extend to a handlebody. We also show that the unique Hurwitz action of order 84(g−1) of PSL(2, 27) on a surface F of genus g = 118 does not extend to any compact 3-manifold M with ∂M = F , thus resolving the only case of Hurwitz actions of type PSL(2, q) of low order which remained open in an earlier paper (Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 117 (1995), 137–151).

Orientation-reversing Free Actions on Handlebodies

We examine free orientation-reversing group actions on orientable handlebodies, and free actions on nonorientable handlebodies. A classification theorem is obtained, giving the equivalence classes and weak equivalence classes of free actions in terms of algebraic invariants that involve Nielsen equivalence. This is applied to describe the sets of free actions in various cases, including a compl...

Extending Homeomorphisms from 2-punctured Surfaces to Handlebodies

Let Hg be a genus g handlebody, and Tg = ∂Hg a closed connected orientable surface. In this paper we find a finite set of generators for Eg 2 , the subgroup of PMCG2(Tg) consisting of the isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of Tg which admit an extension to the handlebody keeping a properly embedded trivial arc fixed. This subgroup turns out to be important for the study of knots in closed 3-mani...

Examples of Irreducible Automorphisms of Handlebodies

Automorphisms of handlebodies arise naturally in the classification of automorphisms of three-manifolds. Among automorphisms of handlebodies, there are certain automorphisms called irreducible (or generic), which are analogues of pseudo-Anosov automorphisms of surfaces. We show that irreducible automorphisms of handlebodies exist and develop methods for constructing a range of examples.

$PI$-extending modules via nontrivial complex bundles and Abelian endomorphism rings

A module is said to be $PI$-extending provided that every projection invariant submodule is essential in a direct summand of the module. In this paper, we focus on direct summands and indecomposable decompositions of $PI$-extending modules. To this end, we provide several counter examples including the tangent bundles of complex spheres of dimensions bigger than or equal to 5 and certain hyper ...

Extending Homeomorphisms from Punctured Surfaces to Handlebodies

Let Hg be a genus g handlebody and MCG2n(Tg) be the group of the isotopy classes of orientation preserving homeomorphisms of Tg = ∂Hg, fixing a given set of 2n points. In this paper we find a finite set of generators for E 2n, the subgroup of MCG2n(Tg) consisting of the isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of Tg admitting an extension to the handlebody and keeping fixed the union of n disjoint pro...
